Gatwick

Gatwick About Gatwick

Situated 24 miles south of London, Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world, and the UK's second largest airport. It has two terminals - North and South, taking over 30 million people per year to around 280 destinations. But it wasn't always like this, in fact, Gatwick was originally meant to be used as a Royal Air Force base during the Second World War, although at this point it was stil not much more than a grass field.

In 1953 the Government declared Gatwick to be London's second airport. The old Gatwick airport was closed for major re-development and in 1959 when re-opened it had been transformed into a modern facility. The 2000 feet runway and the terminal incorporating a rail station made Gatwick into first of its kind in the UK. Later, the M23 link and the M25 London ring road were added and the Gatwick we know today was born.
