About Heathrow
Heathrow is the UK's biggest airport, contributing over �5 billion to our economy each year. It is almost a self-contain city with a population of 60,000 workers. It's hard to believe that this monstrous architectural and engineering feat started life as a small grass airfield, originally used for flying tests. Commercial flights departed from nearby Heston and Hanworth Park airfields.
In 1944 it was taken over by the Air Ministry to be transformed into a transport base to be used by the Royal Air Force during the war. But before it was completed the war ended and Heathrow had massive commercial potential, being so close to the capital. This was its starting point and it developed into the major international airport we know today. |
